Understanding rhinoplasty (nose surgery)

Nose surgery improves the appearance and proportion of your nose to create facial symmetry. It may also correct impaired breathing caused by structural abnormalities in the nose. Nose surgery can be considered by patients who have achieved full facial growth and are 13 years of age and older. Also known as “nose reshaping” and a “nose job,” and medically called rhinoplasty, this procedure can change:

  • Nose size, in relation to the other facial structures
  • Nose width, at the bridge
  • Nose profiles with visible humps and depressions on the bridge
  • Nasal tips that are large and bulbous, drooping, and upturned
  • Nostrils that are large, wide, and upturned
  • Nasal asymmetry and deviation

Additional types of rhinoplasty:

Specialist Dr. Ridha is highly skilled in the ethnic Saratoga Springs rhinoplasty, which is a non-Westernized nasal refinement for African American, Middle Eastern, Asian and Latino/Hispanic clients. Ethnic rhinoplasty requires consummate artistry and a vision for your nose that is not informed by Caucasian stereotypes. He can provide customized, stunning results that honor each patient’s individualism and culture while minimizing aesthetic flaws.

If you are in need of a revision rhinoplasty to correct the errors of a previous nose job or to further resculpt a rhinoplasty that didn’t go far enough in improving your cosmetic issues, Dr. Ridha can offer you a conservative, precision-minded approach that will get the outcome you desire. Revision rhinoplasty is one of the most demanding and challenging procedures, but Dr. Ridha has years of experience under his belt and will set you instantly at ease on your first visit.

What can I expect?

You will go into surgery with a detailed plan created by yourself and Dr. Ridha. Surgeries are unique to every patient, but most include the following steps.

Nose surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis, which means you need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from surgery. Also, someone must be with you for at least the first night following surgery.

The procedure is performed while you are sedated or under general anesthesia.

Depending on your unique surgery, incisions are made either inside the nose or across the narrow strip of tissue separating the nostrils, called the columella. Through the incisions, the soft tissues covering the nose are gently raised to allow for reduction and reshaping with cartilage grafted from other areas of your body.

Most commonly, the cartilage comes from the septum; occasionally, it comes from the ear; and rarely, it can be taken from a rib. Correcting a deviated septum, one of the most common causes of breathing impairment, is achieved by adjusting the nasal structure to produce better alignment.

Once the underlying structure of the nose is sculpted to the desired shape, nasal skin and tissue is redraped and incisions are closed. Surgical incisions must not be subjected to excessive force, abrasion, or motion during healing. For roughly one week, splints, tubes, or packing will likely support your nose from the inside, and a splint or bandages will protect it from the outside. Dr. Ridha provides easy-to-follow instructions to care for yourself after surgery, which include a follow-up visit.

While initial swelling subsides within a few weeks, it may take up to a year for your new nasal contour to fully refine. During this time, you may notice gradual changes in the appearance of your nose as it refines. Swelling may come and go during the first year and may worsen in the morning.
