Breast reduction surgery removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body and alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts. Excess fat may be removed through liposuction alone or in conjunction with excision techniques. Medically called reduction mammaplasty, this surgery can:
If you are a woman in the Saratoga Springs area who is suffering from disproportionately large or pendulous breasts, a breast reduction may be right for your needs. Ideal candidates have achieved their full breast development, do not plan on getting pregnant or breastfeeding, and are in good health, both mentally and physically with no major medical conditions such as hypertension or blood clotting disorders. Clients should have realistic expectations for improvement rather than perfection.
Often times these women will experience back pain, chaffing, fatigue or restricted movements due to their overly large breasts. It may be difficult to perform ordinary physical tasks like participating in sports or completing chores. Sadly, it may be difficult for some women with oversized breasts to experience the joy of playing with their children. The breasts may also be asymmetrical, or have nipples that dip way below the breast crease.
Our dedicated, friendly staff can arrange for a consultation around the busiest schedules. This first visit is very important. You should come to your appointment focused on the matter at hand with a list of your expectations and concerns, as well as unguarded openness and honesty. Being up-front with Dr. Ridha is the key to a successful and safe procedure. With your active involvement, he can help you through every step of the process in confidence. Your first visit may include:
You will go into surgery with a detailed plan created by yourself and Dr. Ridha. Surgeries are unique to every patient, but most include the following steps.
Breast reduction surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis, which means you need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from surgery. Also, someone must be with you for at least the first night following surgery. It may be prudent to arrange for assistance with childcare and household chores following your surgery until you feel up to par.
The procedure is performed while you are sedated or under general anesthesia. An incision is made in one of three locations: around the areola; around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease; or around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and horizontally along the crease. Then the nipple can be repositioned and underlying breast tissue can be reduced, lifted, and shaped.
Occasionally, the nipple and areola may need to be removed and transplanted to a higher position on the breast. Internal incisions are closed with layered sutures, and ones close to the skin are closed with sutures, skin adhesive, or surgical tape.
Dressings or bandages will be applied to the incisions, and you may need to wear an elastic bandage or support bra to minimize swelling and support breasts as they heal. Surgical incisions must not be subjected to excessive force, abrasion, or motion during healing. A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid. Dr. Ridha provides easy-to-follow instructions to care for yourself after surgery, which include a follow-up visit.
The results of your breast reduction surgery are immediately visible and are long lasting. Over time, your breasts may change due to aging, weight fluctuations, hormones, and gravity.
