Understanding Male Breast Reduction
Male breast reduction surgery removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body and alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts. Excess fat may be removed through liposuction alone or in conjunction with excision techniques. Adolescents may benefit from surgery, although secondary procedures may be needed in the future should breast development continue. This surgery can:
- Treat gynecomastia, a swelling of the breast tissue in boys and men caused by hormonal changes, heredity conditions, disease, and the use of certain drugs
- Create symmetry to your figure
- Improve a poor self-image
- Relieve physical pain and discomfort
- Enhance your ability to lead an active life

What can I expect?
You will go into surgery with a detailed plan created by yourself and Dr. Ridha. Surgeries are unique to every patient, but most include the following steps.
Breast reduction surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis, which means you need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from surgery. Also, someone must be with you for at least the first night following surgery.
The procedure is performed while you are sedated or under general anesthesia. Liposuction requires several small incisions. During liposuction, a thin hollow tube, called a cannula, is used to loosen excess fat and remove it by vacuum suction. Excision requires incision patterns that vary depending on the specific conditions and surgical preference. During excision, excess breast tissue is trimmed away. This procedure can also reduce the areola and reposition the nipple to create a more natural male contour. Internal incisions are closed with layered sutures, and ones close to the skin are closed with sutures, skin adhesive, or surgical tape.
Dressings or bandages will be applied to the incisions, and you may need to wear an elastic bandage or support bra to minimize swelling and support breasts as they heal. Surgical incisions must not be subjected to excessive force, abrasion, or motion during healing. A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid. Dr. Ridha provides easy-to-follow instructions to care for yourself after surgery, which include a follow-up visit.
The results of your breast reduction surgery are immediately visible and are long lasting. However, if gynecomastia resulted from the use of certain prescription medications, you must remain fully free from these substances. Maintaining a stable weight also prolongs your results.
