Improving the Appearance of Lips With Fillers

One of the most common concerns of patients who present to our practice is the appearance of their lips.  In most cases, patients desire fuller, plumper appearing lips, and often wish to reduce fine lines that develop in the surrounding skin.  There are several surgical and minimally invasive techniques that can be used to treat the lips, and create a fuller, more sculpted appearance.  While surgical techniques can provide the longest-lasting results, injectable fillers are less invasive, provide immediate results, and require very little downtime.

There are several types of injectable fillers that can be used to enhance the appearance of the lips.  In our office, lip augmentation is often performed with hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, including Restylane, Perlane, and/or Juvederm.  Hyaluronic acid is a building block of collagen, and HA fillers are available as a smooth gel, which is typically injected into the deeper portion of the skin to temporarily smooth wrinkles.  In the lips, HA fillers are injected just below the mucosal layer of the lip with a small needle, and injected until the desired result is seen.  Each patient is unique, and in some patients, injections are performed along the border of the lip, and/or in the surrounding skin to provide a natural-appearing enhancement.

Depending on which filler is used, results will typically last 6-9 months, and sometimes longer.  While there is some discomfort with injection, the use of topical anesthetics prior to treatment, and injectable products that contain local anesthetic have significantly improved patient comfort.  After the injectable procedure is performed, some swelling and mild bruising may be noted, which usually resolves within 24 hours after injection.  For patients who are considering a more permanent procedure for lip augmentation, fillers are also very useful in helping to determine the desired lip fullness and shape, and undergoing injection is helpful in procedural planning.
